I threw out my Bath and Body Works lotions when I decided to try and learn how to make natural products myself. This recipe only needs a few ingredients and it’s something everyone can make! The secret is to use an electric mixer which will create a whipped lotion with a texture that is light and creamy. I know you’ll love it!
- 1/2 cup of Coconut Oil – My Favorite Brand is in our Zeal and Grace Market!
- 1/2 cup of Shea Butter
- Vitamin E (optional)
- Arrowroot Powder or Cornstarch (optional)
- Electric mixer
- Essential Oils
- Container to store it in – See links at the bottom of this post for a few options!
Let’s Get Started!
Set out your ingredients and measuring cups. If you haven’t purchased any yet, I would recommend choosing a shea butter and coconut oil that are organic and unrefined. I’ll post the ingredients I used at the bottom of this post! Scoop your coconut oil into a mixing bowl. I use my Kitchen Aid mixer for this and it works beautifully! If your shea butter feels pretty hard, you can cut chunks of it using a butter knife and cutting board and add it to a glass measuring cup and let it soften over a low temperature for a few minutes on your stove or for about 15-30 seconds in the microwave. It should have the consistency of softened butter. It doesn’t need to be melted, but soft enough to stir in your mixer!
Once the shea butter has softened, add that to your mixing bowl as well. Turn your electric mixer on a low speed and slowly increase the speed as the two ingredients mix together. You can also add Vitamin E if you have it on hand (I add about a half a teaspoon). Vitamin E is wonderful for skin and is also a natural preservative! If you don’t have any, it’s totally fine, this recipe only makes about a cup or so of body butter and I use it up in about a month or two!
After the two ingredients are mixed well, turn the speed up to HIGH, set a 10 minute timer, and let it whip! It should look like this after it’s finished.
Isn’t it pretty?? From here, I add in my essential oils. My favorites to add are Orange, Frankincense, and Lavender! All three smell amazing and are also wonderful for skin. I add about 10 drops of each and then turn the mixer on low and let it stir everything together for a minute or so until everything is combined.
Once everything is combined, I scoop the mixture into a glass container and you’re done! It’s so, so simple. I keep mine next to my bed for easy access! I apply it straight from getting out of the shower and my skin feels moisturized and silky. You’ll notice that this body butter can feel a little greasy at first going on. I only use a little bit on my skin and let it absorb for a few minutes before sitting down or getting into bed. I love knowing this body butter only has pure and natural ingredients in it and my skin loves it as well!

If Your Whipped Body Butter Feels A Little Greasy
Try adding a tablespoon of arrowroot powder or cornstarch to your body butter and whip it again for a minute or two until everything is blended. This may help the body butter feel less greasy and absorb easier!
